Nicki Minaj Receives ‘Video Vanguard Award’ at 2022 MTV Video Music Awards

Nicki Minaj is the undisputed Queen of Rap.

This past Sunday (Aug. 28) night, the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards took place in Newark, New Jersey in the Prudential Center where stars like Taylor Swift, Jack Harlow, Latto, Lizzo, BLACKPINK, J. Balvin and many more showed up to commemorate this year’s most compelling music videos in the landscape across genres.

This year’s MTV’s Video Music Awards’ Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award recipient was none other than Nicki Minaj who has undeniably carved her influence into the monument of rap and hip-hop culture. Nicki joins recipients the likes of Beyoncé, Kanye West, Rihanna, Janet Jackson, Jennifer Lopez and Missy Elliott.

Nicki took the stage to perform a 10-minute set of records like “Monster,” “Roman’s Revenge,” “Beez in the Trap,” “Chun-Li,” “Moment 4 Life” and her latest No. 1 single “Super Freaky Girl”.

Within the same week, Nicki recently scored her first solo No. 1 debuting on the Hot 100 Billboard Charts making history as the first female rapper to debut at No. 1 since Lauryn Hill in 1998.

After the performance, Nicki speech’s started off by thanking the “key people that inspired me and who I think inspired my flow,” including Lil Wayne, JAY-Z, Foxy Brown, Lauryn Hill, Slick Rick, and Doug E. Fresh. She also thanked those who gave her “huge opportunities” such as Kanye West, Beyoncé, Madonna, Mariah Carey, Eminem, Britney Spears, and Rihanna.

“I wish that Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson were here,” she said. “I wish that people understood what they meant and what they were going through. I wish people took mental health seriously, even for the people who you think have the perfect lives. I wish Pop Smoke and Juice WRLD and Nipsey Hussle were here.”
