Grown-ish is channeling modern day A Different World.
ABC’s spin-off of Black-ish — “Grown-ish” which stars Yara Shahidi as Zoey Johnson as she embarks her on the journey to college. The television series Grown-ish takes a look inside that world,
“Rather than directly addressing a specific political or social happening, Grown-ish tackles college culture as a whole,” says Yara Shahidi.
Teen Vogue introduces us to the characters of Grown-ish in an editorial piece featuring the entire cast which featuring model Luka Sabbat, Beyoncé proteges Chloe & Halle and R&B singer Trevor Jackson.
Along with Zoey, the show focuses on seven other young adults who are navigating their own very real, very relatable struggles. Aaron (Trevor Jackson) is the group’s fervent activist and serves as the head of California University’s Black Student Union. Vivek (Jordan Buhat) is a first-generation Indian-American who attempts to mask his inner nerd by basing his style off of whatever Drake wears in his latest music video. Then there’s Nomi (Emily Arlook), the quintessential party girl who is hiding her bisexuality from her family; Ana (Francia Raisa), a first-generation Cuban-American whose conservative political views rub Zoey the wrong way; Luca (Luka Sabbat), the über-fashionable wannabe existentialist; and sisters Jazz and Sky (singers Chloe and Halle Bailey), who are only able to afford college thanks to their full-ride track scholarships.
