Check Out Our Favorite Looks and Performances from AFROPUNK Atlanta 2021
Taking place over September 25th and 26th in Atlanta, AFROPUNK held its first festival since COVID. The festival is a celebration of creative expression and individuality. It sets out to inspire and educate youths from all across the African Diaspora. They strive to unleash expression, honor individuality, and fortify the Black community.
Saturday
AFROPUNK kicked off things with a 30 minute set from the talented Amindi, signaling the official comeback of the much loved celebration. DJ Ohso kept the energy up as the crowd waited for next performers- Atlanta based Experimental/Rock/Funk band Howling Star and alt rock/rap collective Sixteen Bullets on the black stage. After a set by Zimbabwean-born Australian singer-songwriter and rapper Tkay Maidza on the main stage, the crowd shifted back to the black stage for a performance from genre bending Atlanta-based artist Hollow Sinatra. DJ Prince took over, playing some really great mixes ahead of the performance by Nigerian-American R&B duo Ivana and Jessica, better known as VanJess– who took to the main stage dressed in African inspired matching outfits. Houston-native Jack Freeman kicked off the evening of day 1 with his performance on the black stage before KP The Great absolutely shocked everyone with his set on the main stage. Bringing out legends Earthgang, JID, T.I., CeeLo Green, Capella Grey, David Banner, and T.I.’s son Domani., this set was definitely the highlight of day 1. DJ Wally Sparks led us into our last sets of the night from Benji, Tems, and Smino.
In addition to really great performances, Saturday brought us beautiful faces and some really cool fashion. Here are the looks we loved from AP Day 1, courtesy of Anitra Isler.
